Her paintings from the 90s during a peak in her career, were mostly portraits of famous people, which were seen by most critics as reflecting the public’s tendencies to aggrandize media stars to the stature of near royalty. Through the years, Peyton’s paintings have gradually transformed into mainly portraits of her close friends. Critics have criticized her for this transition. Peyton’s content, meaning and intention were questioned. This show which features work from her entire career to date, offers some potential insight into these questions. I think this article, and Peyton’s career thus far, bring light to the fact that although critics do have a great deal of influence on an artist’s career, In our times, it’s the market, not the critics that makes or breaks an artist’s career. For better or worse.

From the article:

“As Ms. Peyton moves into more personal territory, painting more from life than from photographs, her work deepens. Faces that once tended toward an elfin, Kabuki sameness become individualized. More is at stake. Among the famous and admired, the rock stars are replaced by Delacroix, Susan Sontag and Georgia Oâ??Keeffe.”

Read the New York Times Review of the Elizabeth Peyton show at New Museum in New York.

The reviewer, Roberta Smith, reflects the artworld’s general ambiguity towards Peyton’s continued success.
