Basically, I get about 12 feet of wallspace to hang a few pieces from my time here at CCA. I hung two of my older encaustics, and four of the oil paintings I’ve been doing, all are the machines series work. I didn’t hang the felt and fabric piece I did a while back. I had mixed emotions about bringing it, and it came down to convenience. It is big, fragile, and falling apart right now, I didn’t have time to fix it.

I was nervous about my review. I was afraid they were going to tell me my oil paintings sucked. Maybe even worried they wouldn’t get my encaustics and what I’m trying to do. Turns out, they didn’t like my oil paintings. And you know what? It was a tremendous relief to hear it. They really liked the encaustics and felt like something was completely lost with the oils. Also, they didn’t like the change in color palette. Without knowing about the felt and fabric piece I did, they asked if I had thought about more sculptural work. I told them about the felt/fabric piece and they were pissed I hadn’t brought it in. They told me to not listen to anyone, follow my instincts, take more textile classes, and stop worrying about trying to get the series to work in oils. I feel so relieved. I feel like my instincts were right. I feel hopeful for my senior year.

The first semester here was full of enthusiasm but confusion. This semester has been full of frustrations, depression and cynicism. Maybe now I can finally get on track. Maybe it’s time to rethink my class schedule for fall.
