32 Short Films About Glenn Gould

I’m watching a lot of movies lately for my two classes. Last weekend I saw a film about the Canadian classical pianist Glenn Gould, directed by François Girard. Similar plot structure to the Ray Johnson movie: How to Draw a Bunny. The film is made up of snippets of interviews of Goulds acquaintances mixed with reenactments of events in his life leading up to his death. This quiet little film is charming, funny, inspiring. Makes me want to get some of his music. Will you give me ten dollars please?

From IMDB:
“The structure of the film is based on the structure of the piece that Glenn Gould is most famous for playing, Bach’s Goldberg Variations. The Goldberg Variations are 32 short pieces of music that are usually played together”

Also found on IMDB, in one scene, Glenn reads aloud a singles ad he has written:
“Wanted: friendly, companionably reclusive, socially unacceptable, alcoholically abstemious, tirelessly talkative, zealously unzealous, spiritually intense, minimally turquoise, maximally ecstatic moon, seeks moth or moths with similar qualities for purposes of telephonic seduction, Tristanesque trip-taking, and permanent flame-fluttering, no photos required, financial status immaterial, all ages and non-competitive vocations considered, applicants should furnish sets of sample conversation with notarized certification of marital disinclination, references re: low decibel vocal consistency, itinerary and sample receipts from previous successfully completed out-of-town moth flights, all submissions treated confidentially… “
