1776 The Presidio and Mission Dolores are founded in San Francisco
1777 Mission Santa Clara is founded
1797 Mission San José is founded
1812 Fort Ross is established by Russian fur traders
1821 Mexico wins independence from Spain, click making California part of Mexico
1835 The city of Yerba Buena is founded
1838 John Muir is born in Scotland (1838 â?? 1914)
1847 The city of Yerba Buena undergoes a name change to San Francisco
1846-48 California becomes part of US, as a result of the war with Mexico
1848 Beginning of the Gold Rush. The population of San Francisco in 1848 is 600, it reaches 25,000 in 1849.
1849 San José becomes first state capitol.
1850 California becomes the 31st state of the U.S.
1851 Mission Santa Clara becomes Santa Clara College. It is Californiaâ??s first college.
1869 Trans Continental railroad links San Francisco and Oakland to East Coast.
1870 Golden Gate Park founded in San Francisco.
