In Fall 2013 I began creating sculptural “gestures” or “sketches” using everyday objects around my home and studio. In the beginning I gave myself very few parameters so that I could use the exercise as an open ended exploration of both themes and materials. With each new gestural exploration I started to discover that I was drawn to the idea of creating miniatures of what might be found in various contemporary artist’s repertoires. Narratives started to form and I began to seek out materials and themes that could play off of various signature styles. As the project progressed, I weaved in and out of these thoughts. As the initial project comes to a close, my ideas have solidified. I plan on starting phase II of this gesture project. My material and conceptual choices will focus on playful riffs or “love letters” to artists.
The posts that follow, chronicle my explorations into a playful approach to sculptural sketches.
