Wow, what a crappy week I ended up having. I think I’m over the worst of it now. This painting is an attempt at oil painting the machines series, which has been all in encaustic. I actually tried this last semester and ended up painting over it. I am very happy with where this is going. Still, even after a happy crit, I went through a deep funk over a need for approval and encouragement, and I thought, maybe these pieces are also going to be about self development. So I called this one Alpha 2, Needs approval. It’s sort of a reference to hardware development phases as well as a developpment of the human psychy. I don’t know. I’m kinda of out of words this week. We’ll just have to wait and see if the idea sticks I guess. The other new painting I posted on my flickr site is called “Up and to the right” and references electronics shematics in a sort of totemic, primitve art sorta way. It also sort of references a sort of forced enthusiasm we all enncounter occassionally. Like feeling the obligation to drink the kool-aid. I guess. Or maybe it just looks like Christmas. Nobody is going to know any of this stuff by looking at the work. So it’s just words, words with weak pictures. Oh look! I’m self depricating! Yeah… art school is beating me up a little right now.
On a happier note, my wedding cake collage was in a crit last night. It managed to completely acheive it’s goals and I’m really happy about that. I was so embarrassed to be carrying it around, and I think that just shows the level of success I reached with it. It is so sticky sweet. My teacher said he could imagine a pudgy 13 year old girl with braces making this thing on the floor of her room. And yeah, that’s pretty much what I was channeling.
