Doggy Chronicles – A Very Bad Day

Mississippi and her squirrel

I pulled a tuberous root out of the back yard a couple months ago. It was too thick to put in the yard debris bin. It has been sitting by the side of the house along with a large branch that the movers knocked off our tree. We break sticks off all the time for Mississippi to play with. Yesterday we cut up the whole root into perfect doggy sized play things. Last night she was being extra antsy so I went into the yard and grabbed one. She happily chewed the hell out of it. We picked up the remains and all was fine. When we went to bed, she was really restless, kept going underneath our bed, which causes a great racket because she’s almost too big for under the bed. She wasn’t doing her usual whining and barking, she was just fidgety. We figured out she needed to throw up so we try to direct her into the kitchen. Of course she b-lined for the area rug and upchucked all the contents of her belly. She was completely miserable. She tried to come back to bed but it looked like she was too nauseous to put her head down. She threw up three or four more times, all bile. She just wanted to stay in her bed in the living room so we hung out with her and petted her until she fell asleep. Poor little monster. She looked so miserable. I am assuming it was the root but I suppose it could have been a number of things: too much food from all the kongs and treats, a wild mushroom, blackberry root, who knows. I do think she had waaaaay too much stuff in her belly for 2 in the morning. We can’t just kong her all the time. Between kongs and treats, she is getting waaaaay too much food every day. So I guess I have to try and get her more toys that she can’t destroy. I honestly don’t know what to do. I feel a little frustrated and baffled at what to do next.

This morning she is her normal troublemaker self. In fact, she’s a little worse. She’s been plucking out the little plastic and nail brackets that hold the cable to the wall, bringing them into my office to show me she has them, and then she makes me chase her around to get them out of her mouth. Don’t really want her to swallow tiny nails after last night’s illness. I pulled the rest of them out of the wall so there are no more for her to get. If she’s not chewing on little nails, she’s barking at nothing. I just went out to refresh my coffee and she barked a bunch, looked over at me, saw I wasn’t doing anything about it, and went on barking. Not even looking out the window, just sort of facing towards the window and barking, barking, barking.

I was going to take her to doggy daycare today but I wanted to play it safe, make sure she doesn’t have a stomach bug or something. I wish I could go to day care and leave her here. I’m so tired. You’d think she’d want to repay us for all our tender affection last night by being a good girl but I guess she wants to show me she’s healthier than ever. I would have just settled for thankful.

Just when I was hoping for a shot in the arm, I noticed Britney posted about our trials and tribulations on CBS5blogs. Thanks Britney! Mississippi, we’re on the Internets!
