Whatever Happened to the Midnight Snack?

When I was a kid, it was all about the midnight snack. Getting up in the middle of the night and making yourself a sandwich was one of the finer joys in life. In the 70s, it seemed like so many commercials were centered around the midnight snack. Remember those Miracle Whip commercials? People would wake up, go down to the kitchen to make their covetted midnight sandwich, only to find they were out of Miracle Whip? They’d travel miles through the driving snow to get to the all night supermarket. You never hear about midnight snacks anymore. Has America stopped snacking in the middle of the night? Have parents stopped having secret tribal bonding rituals with their children in the still, dark night, with no sound except the droning hum of the fridge?
